Lionel Wininger is the Chief Clinical Psychologist and an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Minnesota Medical School. He earned his PhD in clinical psychology at Long Island University in Brooklyn, and his BA at Brandeis University. He completed predoctoral internship training at NYU Bellevue Hospital. Previously Dr. Wininger was an Assistant Professor and Attending Psychologist at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx. Dr. Wininger's career has concentrated broadly on delivering, improving, and teaching psychotherapy, with specific focus on the emergence of psychosis. In New York he worked with OnTrackNY teams at Columbia University and Montefiore Medical Center; in Minnesota he works with the Strengths/NAVIGATE specialty programs, and helped develop the Early Strengths program for teenagers and young adults with Clinical High Risk (CHR) for psychosis. In his research work, Dr. Wininger has helped implement and study personalized feedback reports to improve engagement and outcomes in measurement-based care. As Associate Program Director in the Psychiatry Residency Program, Dr. Wininger oversees the psychotherapy training curriculum. He specializes in psychodynamic psychotherapy and supervises residents and other early career clinicians in psychology, counseling, and social work. In his clinical practice, he often sees patients with relationship issues, existential angst, identity questions, severe mental states, or no diagnosis.
