Psychologist and doctoral researcher Jana Koosah is currently conducting her doctoral research in the Department of Social Psychology at the University of São Paulo. Her research examines responses to crisis situations within community-based, non-institutional mental health care, drawing on the experience of São Bernardo do Campo, a city in southeastern Brazil. Between 2013 and 2017, the city's municipal mental health management team eliminated psychiatric hospitalisations and implemented 24-hour open-door community mental health services. This change is inspired by the Trieste model of community services. As a researcher, she coordinated fieldwork in the state of São Paulo for the national study, 'The Back Home Programme and Deinstitutionalisation: The Impact on the Daily Lives of Beneficiaries”, which was conducted with beneficiaries of the Brazilian Back Home Programme. Between 2008 and 2010, she also participated in the study 'Housing and Psychosocial Rehabilitation Benefits of the Back Home Programme: An Evaluation of the Implementation Process in the Brazilian Midwest”. Both studies were carried out by Fiocruz Brasília. She is currently undertaking a doctoral research internship at Université Paris 8 in France, examining the differences between French and Brazilian models of psychiatric reform within neoliberal state reforms.
