About me
Ippolytos Kalofonos MD, PhD, MPH, is a medical anthropologist, practicing psychiatrist, and health services researcher in the Greater Los Angeles Veteran Affairs Health System, where he works in the Thoughts and Perceptions clinic and in the Psychiatric Emergency Service. He is Associate Director of the Center for Social Medicine in the UCLA Medical School, Chair of the Global Health Minor in the UCLA International Institute, and the Associate Director of the social science track of the UCLA/CalTech Medical Scientist (MD/PhD) Training Program. He has published widely in clinical and social science journals ranging from The New England Journal of Medicine, Social Science and Medicine, Medical Anthropology Quarterly, American Journal of Public Health, and Current Anthropology. He is currently drawing on his anthropological and psychiatric expertise to adapt a meaning-centered approach to understanding unusual experiences based on principles from the Hearing Voices Movement in a project that brings together community-based activists, Veteran voice hearers, Veteran peer support specialists, and clinicians at the West LA VA.
