Towards a Wider Embrace: Psychoanalytic Approaches to Psychosis (In-Person Only)

The enthusiasm, innovation and sense of discovery that characterized psychoanalytic practice in its early days is experiencing a resurgence, and the energy behind this resurgence has broadened its reach towards greater inclusiveness and wider application.  This panel firmly straddles the paradox of psychoanalytic theory as theory-not, as an emergence of new receptivities to what is most human when the therapist exchanges a prescribed agenda for a method of listening, recognition and therapeutic response.  The paradox at the heart of the theory-not of psychoanalysis is discussed by the panelists through drawing connections to Zen Buddhist thought, through re-visiting the concept of countertransference in light of the rich and intense relationship-not of the cure-through-love, through a re-appreciation of psychoanalytic work with children, and through an appreciation of psychoanalysis as an antidote to the ways in which our so-called mental health system serves the function of reinforcing the fear of internal life by substituting dissociation for negation.  In each of these realms, attention is paid to the opportunities that work with people diagnosed with psychosis offers to the enhanced appreciation of what is possible when psychoanalytic thought allows itself to be lost and re-found within the therapeutic process.
